Subcategories

  • Hermit crabs, BH, are omnivores, tending towards herbivory or carnivory depending on the species. They are very aesthetic and efficient detritivores. They change shells as they grow, and you can provide your hermit crabs with the shells of your choice.

  • Sea cucumbers are very effective sand cleaners. They are useful and indispensable detritivores for large aquariums, and sea cucumbers are completely harmless to the marine animals in your aquarium.

  • Clams are excellent filter-feeding shells. These shells are useful in your aquarium because they filter and consume any excess planktonic food. These clams also feed on phytoplankton, which helps to quickly eliminate potential phytoplankton blooms, thereby preventing pollution in your aquarium and maintaining water quality balance.

  • Crabs like mithrax are algivores and eat algae such as valonias, plankton feeders, or detritivores. They can be used in an aquarium to eliminate different unwanted algae, to recreate a symbiosis with coral, or simply for their originality and impressive colors.

  • Aquarium shrimp and Lysmatas are used for various reasons depending on the species. They can be detritivores, parasites, or even help in the fight against pests like the shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni, which feeds on aiptasias.

  • Boxing shrimp are cleaner shrimp; they clean fish of their dead skin and parasites. This can be very beneficial for the inhabitants, preventing and even curing diseases or infections. Boxing shrimp require enough space in the aquarium to move around without touching your corals or anemones.

  • Marine snails are herbivores; they are excellent grazers. They come in all sizes, so there is certainly one suited for your aquarium to help you get rid of algae. Reef snails are essential for the proper balance of a marine aquarium.

  • Porcelain snails are very good cleaners, porcelain snails are precise; they will graze on algae in every nook and cranny of your aquarium. A porcelain snail is an original and curious animal that will beautify your aquarium.

  • Starfish and brittle stars are exceptional detritivores; they feed on debris, food remnants, and some starfish even clean the sand. Some starfish can also help you get rid of algae.

  • Lobsters are very colorful; for their well-being, it is preferable to have a sandy bottom so they can build tunnels as well as a rich decor with caves. It is possible to acclimate a lobster in a reef aquarium but with caution, as it can harm fish and invertebrates. Do not hesitate to occasionally feed them with small smelts or silversides.

  • Nudibranchs and sea hares are great grazers; they consume a large quantity of algae, including filamentous algae. The largest grazer is a sea hare: the Dolabella auricularia.

  • Sea urchins are mostly omnivorous with a tendency towards being herbivores; they eat algae but will not refuse a piece of mussel or fish flesh. This characteristic makes sea urchins versatile and efficient detritivores. Sea urchins possess an Aristotle's lantern, which is a specific arrangement of their teeth. Their teeth grow throughout their lives (like rodents), which means that sea urchins scrape the surface of rocks to erode their teeth. This has the side effect of reactivating the bacteria present in the rocks and removing the coralline on the surface, allowing water to pass through for proper filtration. This is beneficial for the aquarium.

  • Tube worms are good detritivores in an aquarium because, in addition to being colorful and occupying a prime aesthetic spot in the water column, they are plankton feeders. This means that these tube worms naturally filter the water to capture food remnants.
