Overview

Purigen® is a premium synthetic absorbent unlike any other filtration product. It is not a blend of ion exchangers or absorbents, but a unique macroporous synthetic polymer that removes both soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceed all other competing products by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates by eliminating nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.

The impact of Purigen on trace elements is minimal.

It significantly increases redox. It polishes the water for unparalleled clarity. Purigen® gradually darkens as it becomes exhausted and can be easily renewed by treating it with bleach. Purigen® is designed for use in both marine and freshwater environments.

Purigen® removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceed all competing products by more than 500% .

The advantages

Selectivity

Purigen® is the most efficient organic filtration resin on the market. No other product compares to its ability to clear cloudy water and polish it to unparalleled clarity. Unlike other products on the market that are simple ion exchange resins, Purigen® is specifically designed to be an organic scavenging resin. When ion exchange resins are filled to capacity with metals and other contaminants, Purigen® is just beginning to reach its potential. Purigen® generally ignores simple elemental compounds, having an extreme affinity for nitrogenous organic matter. The primary source of nitrogenous compounds in an aquarium is waste. Fish, corals, and even plants produce nitrogenous waste. Purigen® removes this waste faster and more completely than anything else on the market.

Capacity

Purigen® has an increased capacity due to its vast surface area. All other resins on the market are purely spherical extruded beads. These beads remain smooth even under a microscope. Purigen® is both spherical and macroporous. It has microscopic pores that increase its useful surface area to several times that of a purely spherical resin.

Regeneration

Purigen® can also be regenerated. As it absorbs waste, Purigen® will change color, going from a pale blonde to a dark brown, almost black. Once exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach literally "burns" the organic matter that has been removed from the tank. Be wary of products that claim to be regenerable with a brine solution. This is the regeneration procedure for ion exchange purposes. A brine solution does not remove organic matter. While these resins have a limited organic adsorption capacity, a brine regeneration process only replaces the removed ionic compounds. It does not destroy the large organic molecules that have been removed, which is the primary function of organic adsorption resins.

Sizes: 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 L, 2 L, 4 L

Instructions

Rinse before use.

Use in a fine mesh filter bag (180 microns or less) such as The Bag™ by Seachem . .

For best results, Purigen® should be placed in a way that maximizes water flow through it.

It can be used in a cartridge filter, a media chamber, a housing filter, or any high-flow area of a trickle filter.

Each 250 ml treats up to 1,000 L (250 US gallons) for a period of up to six months.

Exhaustion is indicated by a pronounced discoloration of the beads to dark brown or black.

Regeneration

Soak in a 1:1 bleach solution for 24 hours in a non-metallic container in a well-ventilated area and out of reach of children.

Use a household bleach with 8.25% hypochlorite (unscented, without dyes, do not use splashless bleach).

Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours in a solution containing 4 tablespoons of Prime® or an equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water.

Rinse well.

For use in freshwater, soak for 4 hours in a solution containing 2 tablespoons of buffer per cup of water (Discus Buffer®, Neutral Regulator®).

The original color and full activity should now be restored, and Purigen® is ready to be reused.

Attention: Certain viscous coating products can permanently foul Purigen® and make regeneration difficult.

Do not reuse if a bleach/chlorine smell is detectable. If in doubt, soak the beads in a small amount of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.
