Instructions


For best results, PhosBond™ should be rinsed before use and placed in a way that maximizes water flow through it, but not in a way that it collapses upon itself during the flow.

It can be used in a cartridge filter, a media chamber, a canister filter, or any high-flow area of a trickle filter. It is recommended to use a filter bag such as The Bag.

Use 60 ml (1/4 cup) for every 200 L (50 US gallons) of saltwater or 400 L (100 US gallons) of freshwater.

Leave the product in place for 4 days, then test the phosphate or silicate concentrations with MultiTest™ Phosphate or MultiTest™ Silicate.

If the concentration of the component you are trying to reduce has not dropped to approximately 0.02 mg/L, replace the PhosBond™; otherwise, leave it in place until the levels start to rise again.

As long as the concentrations remain under control, the product is not depleted. Excessive treatment is not recommended. PhosBond™ is not an exchange resin and does not release anything into the water.

It does not retain phosphate or silicate in the water and can be removed, dried, and put back into service until it is exhausted. Continuous use of small amounts is preferable to intermittent use of large amounts.

How to use PhosBond™? How long does it work and when is it exhausted?


PhosBond™ is best used in small amounts and changed frequently. In an environment with a high phosphate reading, PhosBond™ depletes quickly (4 to 5 days). Place the product in a high-flow area and test your phosphate levels, changing as needed. When you see that your level is below 0.2 ppm (mg/L), leave that portion of PhosBond™ in the filter. Continue to test weekly for phosphate until you see it starting to rise again. You will then know it is time to change the PhosBond™. If you have low phosphate levels, PhosBond™ will absorb the silicate from your system. It is inert and safe to leave in your filter.

You claim that PhosBond™ has a high capacity, but company X asserts that its GFO has a much higher capacity. Is this false advertising?


It is actually quite easy to modify the apparent capacity of a GFO during testing. If the capacity of a GFO is tested at an extremely low pH with a phosphate concentration much higher than what the media can fully handle, the media will temporarily absorb much more phosphate than it would under ordinary aquarium conditions. We have no interest in artificially inflating our figures, so the capacity we have listed is the amount of phosphate that the media can completely remove (without releasing it back into the water) at a pH of 8.4.

Can I use PhosBond™ in a media reactor?


We do not recommend it because the tumbling action of a media reactor can cause the production of dust from this media.

How is it different from PhosGuard™, PhosNet™, and phosfiltrum™ (aquavitro)?

 

The main difference between these media is the capacity. PhosGuard has the lowest capacity at 0.82 mg/g of bound PO4, but it is the most economical of the four media. PhosBond™ has a higher capacity than PhosGuard at 1.19 mg/g of bound PO4, and it combines the benefits of PhosGuard and pure GFO (strength, high capacity, and rapid phosphate absorption) while still being very economical. PhosNet™ has the highest capacity of the phosphate absorbers.SeachemAt 1.41 mg/g of bound PO4, and is a pure GFO medium. Our aquavitro® phosfiltrum™ is a very high capacity GFO (1.71 mg/g of bound PO4) that produces very little dust. This medium has a higher capacity than any other GFO on the market.

In recent years, there has been speculation that aluminum oxide-based removers like PhosBond™ release aluminum into the water and subsequently harm corals. The evidence supporting this claim was largely anecdotal.

Thus, through a series of controlled experiments in fresh water and salt water, we aimed to address both the question of aluminum solubility and aluminum toxicity. The results of these experiments show that under reef conditions (pH close to 8), no detectable soluble aluminum is released by alumina. Under conditions of low pH and high doses, soluble aluminum can be released from alumina; at three times the labeled dosage rate, we detected 0.2 mg/L of aluminum at a pH of 5.3.

Furthermore, aluminum oxide is not easily absorbed into the cell to cause negative reactions. Even at three times the dose, soft-bodied corals such as Sarcophyton are not affected.

Company X says that I don't need to replace their phosphate absorber for several months, while your instructions indicate that PhosBond™ needs to be replaced every 4 days during phosphate reduction. Doesn't that make PhosBond™ an inferior product?


Not at all! If it takes several months for a phosphate absorber to reach its full capacity when the tank is rich in phosphates, it means that the medium is exceptionally slow at absorbing the phosphate. PhosBond™ needs to be replaced every 4 days as long as there is a phosphate problem because, given an infinite amount of available phosphate, PhosBond™ absorbs the phosphate so quickly that it reaches its full capacity in 4 days. The 4-day replacement period is based on how quickly the medium works, not on the maximum capacity of the medium.
