Chaetomorpha algae are highly valued by aquarists because they allow for the elimination and absorption of nitrates. Thus, they are commonly used within a refugium, and then extracted from the aquarium to be added to another tank. In this way, they serve as a means of nutrient transport. Since they do not necessarily attach to rocks or the bottoms of aquariums, they are easier to manage and more advantageous than caulerpa algae. Additionally, these algae host amphipods, which can sometimes be used to feed certain species of fish.
