Overview

Reef Plus™ is a full-spectrum reef supplement containing trace elements, vitamins, and amino acids that have been shown to positively impact the growth of corals and other desirable reef creatures. Reef Plus™ is formulated to provide nutrients available in the natural waters of tropical reefs. It contains vitamin B12, vitamin C, thiamine, inositol, choline, iodide, and other essential constituents. Reef Plus™ is nitrate/phosphate-free.

Vitamin supplements from other manufacturers are incomplete, containing only vitamins and trace elements. Reef Plus™ includes the necessary amino acids in addition to a complete complement of trace elements and large amounts of complex vitamins C and B. It is so concentrated that it can be effectively used as a soak for fish-based frozen foods.

The replenishment of a certain number of trace elements is necessary to maintain an ideal environment for the growth and reproduction of marine life. Although the importance of trace elements has been recognized by aquarists for many years, the physiological reasons are not fully understood. The chemical elements in seawater are varied, and similarly, their addition to the aquarium in minute quantities has varied effects on a variety of saltwater plant and invertebrate species. In general, however, these elements are important for metabolic processes and pigment formation. The addition of iron, for example, has been shown to be beneficial for the coloration and growth of corals, anemones, and other photosynthetic animals.

Sizes: 250 mL, 500 mL, 4 L

Instructions

Use 1 capful (5 ml) for every 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week or as needed to maintain coral growth.

Can also be used in food by mixing 1 ml into approximately 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of food.

Refrigerate after opening.

FAQ stands for "Frequently Asked Questions." It is a common term used to refer to a list of questions and answers that are often asked on a particular topic.

How long will Reef Plus™ last if it is refrigerated?

In the refrigerator, Reef Plus™ should be good for about 6 to 12 months after opening.

Every time I add Reef Plus™ to my aquarium, the redox level drops like a brick and triggers my ozone generator. Should I disable the ozone when I add Reef Plus?

Yes, you need to disable the ozone, as it will destroy the product fairly quickly. The organic compounds in Reef Plus™ are beneficial (such as vitamin C, B12, etc.), but most of these beneficial organic compounds are reducing agents (by their very nature) and thus cause a decrease in the redox level in your system. So, while redox is generally a good indicator of water "cleanliness," it can often be misleading because beneficial organic compounds can also cause a drop in redox. Any reducing agent will be destroyed in the presence of a strong oxidant (such as ozone), which is why you need to disable the ozone while dosing with Reef Plus™. Additionally, in general, we do not recommend using ozone regularly, as it can generally do more harm than good. This is mainly because it does too good a job of cleaning the water, destroying all the beneficial vitamins and amino acids in the water along with all the waste you want to destroy. Thus, you end up with an almost sterile tank where few things will thrive without the addition of products like Reef Plus™... but if you continue to use ozone, it will simply destroy the components of Reef Plus™ as well. Another issue that can occur is that ozone can also produce toxic compounds in the water. For example, chloride can be oxidized into chlorine, bromide into bromine, iodide into iodine; all uncharged "ine" halogens are highly toxic. All this depends on the "level" at which you run the ozone, but in general, ozone does not distinguish between "good" and "bad" organics, and at any level, it has the ability to convert harmless halogen ions into deadly diatomic halogens.

When I add Reef Plus™, my skimmer goes crazy. Should I turn off the skimmer because it seems like it will remove the organic matter from Reef Plus™ over time?

If the organic materials in Reef Plus™ were not used at all, then yes, most of them would eventually be removed by the skimmer. However, part of our dosing schedule (twice a week) is based on the utilization of the product's components as well as the loss through skimming. Therefore, some part is lost through skimming, but a large part is also used. Additionally, only the hydrophobic components are likely to be removed by a skimmer; many components of Reef Plus™ are hydrophilic and thus remain well-dissolved in the water and are not removed by skimming.

The components of Reef Plus™ indicate the presence of iodine. With this additive, is it generally necessary to use additional additives to increase iodine levels to the recommended levels (0.06 to 0.1 ppm)?

Reef Plus™ contains iodide, a more usable and soluble species of iodine. In a lightly stocked reef aquarium, the recommended dose of Reef Plus™ might suffice. Most hobbyists tend to have a substantial amount of calcareous organisms, algae, etc., which would all use iodide. That's why we manufacture Reef Iodide. Our Reef Iodide is concentrated and stabilized. It is less likely to convert into iodine or iodate compared to others on the market, making it safer to use.

Will the organic materials contained in Reef Plus™ cause undesirable algae blooms or red slime?

Reef Plus™ contains organic matter. However, the organic matter in Reef Plus™ does not directly support algae growth.
