Overview

Strontium is found in natural seawater at a concentration of about 8 to 10 mg/L. It is chemically very similar to calcium, and many organisms incorporate it into their skeletons along with calcium. Its addition to reef aquariums facilitates the growth of corals, coralline algae, and other organisms that deposit a skeleton or calcareous shell, including tridacnid clams.

Reef Strontium ™ is designed to restore and maintain strontium at levels found in natural seawater without affecting the pH. Strontium is used in the same manner as calcium and has similar importance in maintaining vigorous growth levels.

Reef Strontium ™ contains 10,000 mg/L of strontium available in the form of gluconate complex. The gluconate complexation offers several advantages: it increases the bioavailability of strontium, provides a rich source of metabolic energy to help maintain peak coral growth, and inhibits strontium precipitation/alkalinity depletion. The gluconate contains neither nitrogen nor phosphorus, so it is biologically impossible to lead to algae growth in a properly maintained reef system.

Instructions

Beginner

Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week.

Advanced

Check the strontium level (use Reef Status ™ Strontium to test strontium levels), then follow the addition scheme above until strontium is adjusted to 8–12 mg/L.

Each 5 mL/80 L increases strontium by approximately 0.6 mg/L.

The amount or frequency may be adjusted as needed to maintain strontium.

Expert

After determining the strontium consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system.

Use the following formula (or skip the calculations and use our dosage calculator) to determine the amount to add to your top-off water: m = 0.1 vs (m = ml of product to add to top-off water, v = tank volume in liters, s = amount to increase strontium in mg/L).

For example, if you want to increase strontium by 2 mg/L in a 200-liter tank, you would add 0.1x200x2 = 40 ml to the top-off water.

Considerations

Use Reef Status ™ Strontium to test strontium levels

We recommend a strontium level between 8-12 mg/L.

It is advisable to make large adjustments slowly to avoid exceeding the intended level.

Excess strontium may increase carbonate alkalinity loss.

Do not mix directly with a carbonate supplement.
