Reef Advantage Calcium™ - 250g - SEACHEM

- Concentrated ionic calcium powder
- Maintains magnesium and strontium
- Can be added directly to the aquarium

Overview

Reef Advantage Calcium™ is a non-caustic optimized blend (pH 8.3–8.6) of ionic calcium designed to restore and maintain calcium at levels found in natural seawater. Calcium and carbonates are essential for all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health.

Reef Advantage Calcium™ also includes magnesium and strontium in quantities proportional to typical usage rates (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr). This allows for the maintenance of these two important elements while maintaining calcium. Unlike limewater (kalkwasser), Reef Advantage Calcium™ does not have a caustic pH and does not deplete magnesium. When used as directed, it does not deplete alkalinity.

Sizes: 250g, 500g, 1kg, 4kg

Instructions

Beginner

Use 5g (1 level teaspoon) per 150L (40 US gallons) twice a week.

For precise dosing, use the Seachem digital spoon scale.

Dissolve in at least 250ml (1 cup) of freshwater.

Check calcium levels every 2 weeks and adjust the amount or frequency accordingly.

Advanced

Check the calcium level (use Reef Status™ Calcium to test magnesium levels), then follow the dosing pattern above until calcium is adjusted to 380–420 mg/L.

Each 5g/150L increases calcium by approximately 12 mg/L.

The amount or frequency can be adjusted, but do not exceed 10g/150L per day.

Subsequently, use as needed to maintain calcium.

Expert

After determining the calcium consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system.

Use the following formula (or skip the calculations and use our dosing calculator) to determine the amount to add to your top-off water: m = vc / 400 (m = grams to add to top-off water, v = tank volume in liters, c = amount to increase calcium in mg/L).

[For reference: 1 gallon = 3.8 liters, 5g = 1 teaspoon].

Considerations

Use Reef Status™ Calcium to test calcium levels.

We recommend a Ca level between 380-420 mg/L with an alkalinity between 3-6 meq/L (8-17 dKH).

It is advised to make large adjustments slowly to avoid exceeding intended levels or shocking corals and inverts.

Each 5g/150L increases calcium by approximately 12 mg/L.

DO NOT OVERDOSE: Excess calcium may increase the loss of carbonate alkalinity. Do not mix directly with a carbonate supplement. Ideally, calcium and carbonate additives should be added on alternate days or at least 30 minutes apart.

FAQ

What is the concentration of Reef Advantage Calcium™? What is the advantage?

Reef Advantage Calcium™ is a concentrated calcium supplement capable of raising 20 gallons of water by 25 ppm of calcium with only 1 teaspoon. The biggest advantage is the ability to know exactly how much product to add to achieve any calcium level while restoring other essential ions. As a bonus, it mixes at a pH of 8.3 to 8.6 so you can forget about the pH battles associated with other calcium supplements. Additionally, it contains proportional ratios of strontium and magnesium to typical depletion rates. If Reef Advantage Calcium™ is used to maintain calcium, other strontium and magnesium supplements are not necessary.

What is the difference between Reef Advantage Calcium ™ and Reef Calcium ™?

Our Reef Advantage Calcium ™ and Reef Calcium ™ are completely different calcium supplements. Reef Advantage Calcium ™ is a highly concentrated and very economical ionic calcium. Reef Calcium ™ is a very easily available organic calcium complex. The calcium in this product is bound to an easily metabolized carbohydrate, making it highly available and requiring less energy from your corals to utilize this form of calcium. By using these products together, I would consider Reef Advantage Calcium ™ as your primary calcium supplement and Reef Calcium ™ as your secondary calcium supplement.

What is the difference between Reef Calcium ™, Reef Advantage Calcium ™, and Reef Complete®? Why should I use one product over another?

Reef Complete® is the liquid version of Reef Advantage Calcium ™. These are ionic calcium supplements that also provide magnesium and strontium in typical usage ratios. Since they are identical, it comes down to whether you prefer liquids or powders. Personally, I prefer liquids because they are easy to dose and no premixing is required. That said, powders can be very economical. Reef Calcium ™ is an organic calcium intended to help maintain calcium levels in a system, while Reef Advantage Calcium ™ and Reef Complete® are meant to increase calcium levels in the system. Reef Calcium ™ is a calcium poly-gluconate that will provide more calcium to the system without corals expending more energy, thereby increasing growth and maintaining calcium levels. Reef Calcium ™ is generally not used to raise calcium in the system but rather to maintain the existing calcium at ideal levels. If the levels are not within the ideal range, we recommend using Reef Complete® or Reef Advantage Calcium ™ to increase calcium levels.

How can I mix Reef Advantage Calcium ™ for use in an automatic dosing system?

To prepare a stock solution, use the following formula for Reef Advantage Calcium:

____ (x) ____ (amount you want to increase calcium each week) ÷ 12 ppm (amount a standard dose raises calcium) = ____ (a) ____ (how many doses you would need per 150 L to increase calcium by x)

______ (a) _____ (result (a) from above) × 5 g (standard amount of grams per 150L) = _____ (b) ______ (amount of grams per 150 L needed to increase calcium by (x) ppm)

____ y ____ (the volume of your tank) ÷ 150 L (standard dose volume) = ___ (c) ___ (amount of dose you need for (y))

___ (b) ___ (see (b) above) × ___ (c) ___ (see (c) above) = ____ (d) _____ per week

Divide by 7 to get the daily amount

For your reference: The amount of Reef Advantage Calcium ™ that we have successfully dissolved is 1 teaspoon in 25-30 ml of liquid. This means that for 1 L of RO/DI water, you should be able to successfully dissolve 33 to 40 teaspoons (165 g to 200 g) of Reef Advantage Calcium ™. These are just estimates based on our results, and results may vary in a larger volume of water.
